Road Trip Notes

Rain, cold temps, high winds? Those conditions won’t keep golfers off the course. So what will? Extreme heat!

We are currently driving through Mesquite, NV and the temperature gauge reads 114. Middle of the day, beautiful golf courses, not a single golfer out there. Not one on any of the holes seen from the road. Empty. Wide open.

What keeps you off the course? What are the worst conditions you have endured?

Next post.

  1. Rain. Hate playing in rain.

Worst conditions were 80 to 95km/hr winds last year. The State Emergency Services responded to 20 calls in the neighborhood during the time we were playing, for uprooted trees falling on houses, roof tiles blowing off and power lines down.

  2. Once, I played golf with snow on the ground in Michigan. Snow had only dusted the fairways but for some reason the snow was thick on the greens. We would hit our golf balls onto the greens and count a two putt. Sometimes, we couldn’t find our golf balls when we landed on the greens. I had never lost a golf ball on a green before. It was so funny! The sun started going down when we reached the 12th hole, and then it started sleeting. My buddy and I kept playing while our wives called us crazy and headed for the car. We finished the round in the dark, but we were froze. I now live in Florida and the only thing that will keep me off a course is a hurricane. However, I would like to try and hit a tee shot with an 80 mile an hour wind pushing from behind! Ha Ha.

  3. I would say I have “auto mechanics disease.” I talk about golf all day so when the day is over I don’t want to play.

So that is what keeps me off the course. I find the longer I work on golf the less I play. Ha Ha.

  4. Can’t say that I blame them TOO much for skipping the mid-day heat like that. I walked 36 holes in Phoenix on a day that got up to 113 degrees. Probably not the brightest thing I’ve ever done. Even drinking 32 ounces of water nearly every other hole wasn’t enough to stay hydrated. I spent the next two days in bed dehydrated.

  5. I’m like Tiger GC, only surgery keeps me off the course.

  6. I live in Scranton, PA and we get a fair share of snow. During the winter months, if I’m bored, I like to go hit a few balls. B-b-b-b-bbbbut I h-h-h-h-h-hhate fr-gg-g-g-g-g-g-gggid temperatures!

  7. Went to Half Moon Bay in April, just in time for the cold snap and high onshore winds, simultaneously…

Froze our butts off, and had to compensate for the howling wind so much that our tee shots on the 17th (links course) hole were aimed LEFT of the Ritz Carlton, and STILL were blown right of the green…(and they were straight shots, too!!!)

Flagsticks were bent at almost 60deg. angles…flags were getting tattered…

But it was the tenth anniversary trip, and we soldiered on….

And to think that we almost took a flyer (literally) to Phoenix when Southwest Airlines canceled our flight out of BUR to OAK, as well as the two subsequent flights due to “mechanical difficulties”….

It was a MEMORABLE trip, though….
