The Golfchick

That chick blabbing about anything golf related.

Excessive weekday golf… or not enough?

Some of you might have noticed I’ve been playing more golf on weekdays… and not on travel days. That’s because I was recently laid off from my job. Of course, I feel like I should be playing golf EVERY day now. It’s amazing how many things there are to do when you lose your job. Where does all my time go? Plus, there’s the ever-present element that makes me want to save my money now. Perhaps that’s the Capricorn in me, if you believe in that stuff. Wait, the Capricorn thing is supposed to be the element that makes me feel like a lowlife dirtbag if I’m not working my ass off. I never thought I garnered so much of my identity from my work until I didn’t have any. It’s not really that I saw myself as my title as I just need to be working at something to feel valuable. I’d like to spend that energy on golf, but I have to be realistic.

Hey, I just thought of something about where all my time goes. It’s there – I just don’t pack as much into it anymore. They say (damn them) “if you want something done, give it to a busy person.” I’m not busy enough to get enough done. Maybe if I golf more, I’d fit more into the rest of my day. I knew if I circled around this enough I could rationalize more golf!

Oh, and does anyone out there want to hire a golf chick?

Next post.

  1. Sorry to hear about the layoff. Things are slightly unstable here too with the Shuttle program winding down. If you’ve got a membership you should take maximum advantage of it. If you’re willing to network a bit, you may find job prospects out the on the course!

  2. Well, Good luck finding a job (if that’s what you want) and good luck with the golf too. I dunno what you do for a living, but I have found a lot of good business contacts out on the course. Maybe you should be playing more now :-)

  3. Thanks guys.

Memberships around here are several thousand for weekday play only. I’m thinking about it, but then what if I do and then get a job? It’ll go to waste.

I do meet some interesting folks out on the course – who knows what will come of it?

the more you want a job, the less likely you’re going to get it.
on the other hand, the more golf you play, the more likely you’re going to meet someone who’s going to connect you to someone who is looking for your expertise.
So spend time at the range, chat with the players around you, get those 3-4 rounds a week, and chances are you’ll lower your handicap and land a great job!
    keep your chin up, GC.
    Cheers,
    Megan

  5. What’s funny is that when I was looking for a job (my previous job) about 5 years ago, I randomly met someone who happened to have the perfect job for me, and he actually told me, “you are definiltey going to have to buy some clubs and start golfing if you’re going to work here”.

Needless to say, I took the job and bought some clubs after the first check 😉

  6. At least you have more time for the…ahem…more important things in your life like golf. Keep your head up. There’s definitely work out there.
